Good Hotel Guide Review:
Built as a Victorian gentleman's club and overlooking dunes and salt marshes, this small hotel/restaurant/bar has been given a contemporary look by its owners, Margaret and Ian Snaith. They tell us that refurbishment is now complete. Public rooms have mosaic tiled floors and dark woodwork, Lloyd Loom furniture, potted plants and 'calming background music'; the conservatory restaurant faces a walled garden. Bedrooms have sandy seashore colours, wooden blinds and a new bathroom. Some new ground-floor rooms in the herb garden are planned. A recent report 'Excellent, not pretentious, just comfortable, warm place to stay. The owners give everything their personal attention.' Their 23-year-old son Eric, is the chef; his maître d' is 21-year-old Mark Dobby. The style is informal, the young Australasian staff wear long green aprons and crisp white shirts. The menu, served in the restaurant and seafood bar, has much fresh local produce, notably fish, eg, smoked salmon terrine; halibut with marinated courgette;baked plum tartlet with sabayon. Children under 12 are encouraged to mix and match from a 'kids' menu (dishes like haddock, chips and mushy peas; Lincolnshire sausages with crushed new potatoes and beans). Breakfast includes 'outstanding local kippers'; smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. There is an 'excellent supply of maps and local information' and good walking along the Norfolk Coastal Path in this 'gorgeous part of the country, unspoilt by tourism. 'Quiet at night despite being on a main road'. Dogs are welcomed. (HBP and others)
